We are aiming to create an online tool that can be used by individuals to assess whether they may benefit from taking Aspirin in early pregnancy.
Background
Preeclampsia is a serious pregnancy condition that can cause high blood pressure, seizures, organ damage, poor baby growth, or even death. It affects 3–5% of pregnancies, usually later in pregnancy. For individuals at higher risk of preeclampsia, taking low-dose Aspirin before 16 weeks can lower the risk. Because of maternity care shortages in Canada, many people don’t see a provider until around 20 weeks—after the ideal time to start Aspirin, therefore many people are not aware to start Aspirin in time to benefit from the risk reduction.
In this study we aim to co-create an online tool that can be used by individuals in early pregnancy to self-assess whether they are at increased risk of preeclampsia, and may benefit from taking Aspirin in early pregnancy.
Interested in participating?
We are recruiting individuals with lived experience to help us create this online tool through two virtual focus group meetings and an individual interview.
If you are interested in participating in this study, please email liauw.research@cw.bc.ca.
Who can participate?
You may be eligible to participate in this study if you:
- Delivered a live infant >20 weeks gestation, within the past 2 years
- Resided in British Columbia during your pregnancy
- Are 19 years of age or older
- Speak English
If you are interested in participating in this study, please email liauw.research@cw.bc.ca.
What does the study involve?
Participants will be asked to participate in two 60-minute virtual focus groups and one individual 45–60-minute interview (virtual or in person).
Our focus groups will aim to generate ideas that will help us to co-create the online tool. We
will work together to adapt existing preeclampsia risk factor screening checklists to ensure the
tool is user-friendly, efficient, and easy to use for patients. The individual interview will be an
opportunity for you to use a draft of the online tool and provide your feedback and suggestions
to improve the final version.
